Our Learning Journey

At Bosley St Mary’s we have used the National Curriculum, Ofsted research and other professional discussions to create a curriculum policy that supports our school’s values, ensuring it is:

• a place where we encourage and promote the growth of Christian values, where everyone is safe, valued and respected.
• a place where we encourage everyone to make healthy life choices.
• an enjoyable place where all efforts and achievements are celebrated.
• a place where everyone is encouraged to make a positive contribution.
• a place that prepares children for further education and beyond.

Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is broad and balanced taking into account our school’s unique characteristics. We build children’s aspirations demonstrating possibilities for their future lives.

Curriculum Implementation

Our carefully crafted curriculum balances the national expectations and a range of experiences allowing our children to flourish. Due to our size, we have chosen to teach our curriculum on a 2 or 3 year rolling programme, this is class dependent. Our curriculum maps for each class can be found below.

Some subjects are taught yearly but have progressive skills such as PE and PSHE. Clear planning allows the curriculum to be dynamic and adapt to the context of the school and children’s needs. Age related expectations combine the acquisition of knowledge and development of skills to create a purposeful and exciting learning journey for every child. The curriculum has high expectations to combine transferable skills, demonstrate a breadth of vocabulary and develop strong cross curricular links. Inviting classroom environments stimulate and engage quality thinking and reasoning. Implementing our assessment procedures, teachers adapt planning to the children’s needs; incorporating holistic approaches to teaching and learning. Children are given opportunities to reflect on their learning and think carefully about their feedback. Curriculum Impact

We use rigorous triangulated monitoring throughout the year to gauge the impact of the curriculum design. Alongside senior leadership, middle leadership monitor individual subjects: reviewing learning, evaluating pupil voice, providing individual feedback to move practice forward, celebrating positives and highlighting areas for development. Our small school team strengthen our ethos and vision, working together to reflect upon our curriculum and share outcomes driving forward next steps. Learning is measured through careful analysis of the application of skills across the curriculum; showing how acquisition of knowledge is enhanced dramatically by expectations to evidence quality thinking and demonstrate individual understanding. Performance analysis is linked to this triangulated monitoring; measuring staff performance against individual and school targets, which are reviewed regularly.

As a small, rural church school community, we believe our children possess unique talents, skills and qualities. As such, they have the right to succeed, the right to recognise their own greatness and the right to develop who they are in a respectful, nurturing Christian environment. Our curriculum is firmly rooted in our values and are guided by the words in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
